The Church's love for the poor . . . is a part of her constant tradition. This love is inspired by the Gospel of the Beatitudes, of the poverty of Jesus, and of his concern for the poor. Love for the poor is even one of the motives for the duty of working so as to ``be able to give to those in need.`` It extends not only to material poverty but also to the many forms of cultural and religious poverty.
The St. Mary’s Cathedral Family Sponsorship Group is an ever-growing organization of donors and volunteers in the Kingston community that serves God through service to the human family, by providing humanitarian assistance to refugees in the international community, offering them a chance to have a secure future in Canada by way of facilitating their resettlement and the reunification with family members, and supporting them as they begin to integrate in the local community.
Our first sponsorship:
The first family we sponsored was a family of 11 from Burundi, who have now settled with their friends and community in Quebec city.
Windows of opportunity open further: Reuniting a family
As of January 2016, we are beginning the sponsorship of a second Burundi family. The Mother of the family has sought asylum in Canada after receiving death threats in her home country. Her husband and children remain behind, as refugees in Rwanda.
Future projects: helping those most in need
Additionally, we have received requests to sponsor a Congolese family of 4, who are living in a refugee camp in Uganda, and a Congolese single mother and her 4 children, who are refugees in Mozambique. We are hopeful that in the future we may be able to answer affirmatively these requests for private sponsorship.
Our role in sponsorship:
The role of the private sponsor is to provide full financial, emotional, and settlement support to the newcomer family for the first 12 months after their arrival. A minimum of $35,000 should be raised, per family. We welcome donations of used goods; including furniture, household items, and clothing.
If you wish to donate, cheques can be made payable to ‘St Mary’s Refugee Sponsorship’, or online through Canada Helps.
